Injuries & Falls at Care Homes
Care home neglect and poor care
Whether being admitted to a care home as a resident for the first time or returning from a lengthy stay in hospital, it is good practice for the care facility to complete a care plan early on (or an updated care plan) and undertake various risk assessments to ensure your vulnerable relative is safe and well-looked after so that their needs are met. Delay can result in harm being suffered by the resident.
Following discharge from hospital, it is essential that the care home carefully reads the Discharge Summary as it may stipulate changes in the level of care needed, or different doses of medication, or new medication etc. Too often, we see care homes who have not read the Discharge Summary, or who have not implemented the recommendations, causing the resident to have an accident or injury – which could so easily have been avoided.
Moreover, it is quite common to see that care plans are not undertaken immediately, comprehensively or even at all, or else not updated frequently as the resident’s needs change, unfortunately, leading to accident or injury.
If you are at high falls risk and have fallen whilst a resident in a care home, you may be entitled to compensation.
Farley Dwek handle cases where there is evidence of poor care or neglect causing injury.
